Shirley J. Solomon, age 81, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on September 6, 1943, in Atlanta, Texas, to Ralph and Jessie Horton, and was the youngest of three children. Shirley lived a life marked by love, faith, and resilience. She worked hard as a rancher, farmer, and homemaker, creating a warm and welcoming home for all who entered. She found joy in the simple things—baking, gardening, puzzles, reading, and watching her favorite John Wayne Westerns. Her greatest joy came from time spent with family. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who never missed a game, school event, or moment to support her loved ones. Her quiet strength, steady presence, and deep love shaped generations. Shirley is survived by her children, Lydia Merck and Brian Crider (wife Judy); grandchildren, Brian Crider (wife Ronni), Tori Crider (fiancé Jarrett Brooks), and Nicole Merck; and great-grandchildren, Jarrell Brooks, Everly Crider, Kaden Merck, CJ Merck, Karson Merck, Caison Merck, and Desmon Merck. She is also survived by her siblings, Delores Crabb and Richard Horton, and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband James Solomon, and her granddaughter Brandi Crider. A celebration of Shirley’s life will be held on Monday, May 19, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at First Assembly of God Church in Mountainair, New Mexico. Shirley will be remembered for her kindness, her love for family, and the legacy of strength and warmth she leaves behind.
