In Loving Memory of Russell “Rusty” Allen Brown

On June 18, 2026, surrounded by the love of his children and held peacefully in their arms, Russell “Rusty” Allen Brown passed away on Bainbridge Island, Washington. He was 78 years old.

Born on May 27, 1948, in Houston, Texas, to Nancy Ann “Nan” Brown and James “Jim” Brown, Rusty entered the world as the oldest of three children. From the very beginning, he embraced the role of big brother – a position he carried with pride, humor, and occasionally the kind of advice that was equal parts wisdom and mischief.

Rusty lived a life rich with stories, laughter, and love. He had a gift for making people feel welcome, whether through a well-timed joke, a warm smile, or simply by being present when someone needed him. He never met a stranger for long. Friends, family, neighbors, and even casual acquaintances often found themselves drawn into conversation, leaving a little happier than they were before.

He believed life was meant to be enjoyed and that laughter was one of its greatest gifts. Rusty had a knack for finding humor in everyday moments and could turn even an ordinary gathering into a memorable occasion. His family will forever cherish the hilarious, often outrageous stories he told, always with the kind of humor that left everyone laughing.

Rusty found joy in many of life’s simple pleasures. He had a deep appreciation for mariachi music and the rich traditions of Mexican and New Mexican culture, which brought him comfort, connection, and countless happy memories throughout his life. He also loved nature and could often be found admiring and tending to his trees or sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm for the natural world. Whether enjoying music, spending time outdoors, or gathering with family and friends, Rusty embraced the things that made life beautiful.

Above all else, Rusty loved his family. He shared a special bond with his mother, Nan, the relationship they had influenced the way he loved and cared for his own family. He was a devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. His greatest joy came from watching his family grow and celebrating their accomplishments, milestones, and adventures. Whether offering encouragement, sharing a laugh, or simply spending time together, he made sure those he loved knew they mattered.

Rusty was preceded in death by his parents, Nan and Jim Brown; his beloved twin granddaughters, Bridgette and Brittany Brown; his niece, D’Aun “Dee Dee” Sedillo Zamora; and his nephew, Esequiel Sedillo.

He is survived by his children, Melvin (Julie) Brown, Yolanda (Patrick) Merritt, and Yevette (Simon) de France, as well as their mother and Rusty’s former spouse, Louella Bobbe. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Megan (Victor) Dominguez, Jacob Brown, Milo Merritt, Axel Merritt, Lola de France, and Nina de France; his adored great-grandchildren, Vic Dominguez, Harley Dominguez, Paisley Brown, and Ryker Brown; his sister, Melinda Massey; his brother, Wesley Brown; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will miss him dearly.

In his later years, Rusty was blessed to be surrounded by compassionate care and genuine kindness. His family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the incredible staff at Bainbridge Island Health & Rehabilitation, who cared for him with warmth, dignity, and dedication. Over the years, they became much more than caregivers – Rusty loved them dearly, and they loved him in return. They became his second family, bringing friendship, laughter, and comfort to his life. His family will always be grateful for the love and care they shared with him.

Rusty’s legacy lives on in the countless memories he created, the laughter he inspired, and the love he shared so freely. While his family mourns his loss, they take comfort in knowing that his stories will continue to be told, his lessons remembered, and his spirit carried forward in every gathering where laughter rings a little louder because he was once part of it.

A life well-lived is measured not by years alone, but by the love left behind. By that measure, Rusty’s life was extraordinarily rich.

He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever held in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

The family is grateful for the love, support, and kindness shown during this time. A private memorial service will be held for family and close loved ones. Those who knew Rusty are invited to remember him with a smile, share a favorite story, or enjoy a laugh in his honor.
