Ronald “Tooter” Davis, aka Pop, 81 loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle and friend passed away peacefully on January 18, 2026. Tooter was born on June 12, 1944 to the late Clarence and Ruth (Scarborough) Davis at his home in Moriarty, NM. Tooter participated in basketball and track and field throughout junior high and high school and was a member of the Moriarty FFA. He served in many chapter offices and also served as New Mexico State FFA President in 1964-65. He graduated from Moriarty High School in 1962. He fell in love and married Shirley Dunn in 1966.
Tooter was known as the “Voice of the Moriarty Pintos” and was inducted into the Moriarty High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2022. He announced football games for over 52 years. He also announced some basketball games including a few on the radio throughout his career. Tooter worked for Central NM Electric Cooperative for 32 years and he retired in December 2006, but continued to ‘ride the line’ on all family trips. He had a strong Christian faith and was a member of Bethel Methodist Church in Moriarty for 48 years before attending Valley View Christian Church. He was an avid sports fan and a loyal Lady Lobo Basketball season ticket holder for over 20 years. He enjoyed watching all sports either live or on TV and he was also an avid Dodgers fan. He became a Dallas Cowboys fan at the inception of the franchise because they signed Lobo Don Perkins. He remained a loyal fan all his life. His greatest joy was spending time with his family. Some of his favorite times were buying, preparing, showing and selling animals at fairs and other stock shows with the kids and grandkids as well as watching the grandkids at their school and sporting events.
Tooter is survived by his wife Shirley, son Scott and daughter Carla Sue and husband Steve; his grandchildren Tyler Davis, Harry Davis, Anna Sanders and her husband Julian and Caleb ‘CJ’ Collins. He is also survived by his sister Shirley Maldonado, sister-in law Regena Hinze and husband Roy, brother-in-law Buddy Dunn and wife Pam and sister-in-law Linda Wells. He also leaves many cherished nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and extended family and longtime friends.
Tooter was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Donald Davis, his brother Walter Davis and nephew Craig Davis
A viewing will be held on Friday, January 23, 2026 from 5-7 pm at Harris Hanlon Mortuary in Moriarty. Services will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2026 at 11 AM at Valley View Christian Church in Edgewood, with Pastor Brandon Shaffer Officiating. Burial to follow at Barton Cemetery in Edgewood.
Pallbearers will be Tyler Davis, Harry Davis, Julian Sanders, Caleb “CJ” Collins, Luther Dunlap, Ty Cason, and John Blaschke. Honorary Pallbearers will be Buddy Dunn, Roy Hinze, Mike Tubbs, Dennis Davis, Ronald Davis. Lorenzo Romero and Tyler Miles.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Presbyterian Hospice through Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation, Moriarty High School Athletics, or Valley View Christian Church.
