Robert "Red" Howard Maxwell, 78, passed away peacefully on June 9, 2026, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Red was born on February 9, 1948, in Garden City, Kansas, to Robert Fred Maxwell and Helen Blackburn Maxwell. He made his home in Moriarty, New Mexico, at the place he affectionately called the "The Last Chance Chicken Ranch." Red found joy in life's simple pleasures, especially spending time sitting on his front porch, watching the world go by, visiting with friends and neighbors, and enjoying the company of the animals he loved so much.
Red had a passion for motorcycles, big rigs and fast cars his entire life. His warm personality, storytelling and love of conversation made him a friend to many and he will be remembered by all that knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Fred Maxwell and Helen Blackburn Maxwell, and by his sister, RoAnne Hughes.
Red is survived by his children, Donna Michelle Maxwell, Michael Maxwell, and Amanda Jaramillo; his nieces and nephew, Jane Ann Thornton, Jenny Hughes, and Donald “Duck” Hughes and his beloved grandchildren, Elizabeth Maxwell, Madison White, Zachary Maxwell, Mikinlee White, Lillie Jaramillo, Emma Jaramillo, and Clare Jaramillo.
Red's love for family, friends, animals, and the open road will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He leaves behind many cherished memories and a legacy of generosity, kindness, laughter, and companionship.
A memorial service celebrating the life of Robert "Red" Maxwell will be held at Harris-Hanlon Mortuary in Moriarty, New Mexico, at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 16, 2026.
A graveside service and burial will take place on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at the cemetery in Ulysses, Kansas.
