Nico Martin Smith

Nico Martin Smith, 36, of Moriarty, NM, passed away on March 27, 2026. Born on May 10, 1989, in Albuquerque, NM. Nico lived a life marked by love, joy, integrity, generosity and touched the hearts of everyone who knew him. 

Nico graduated Moriarty High School in May 2008, where he ran cross country, track and wrestled. He was an artist in many ways from photography, sketching, painting and was very articulate with building stuff with his hands. 

He attended CNM taking class after class; he was unsure of what he wanted to do. So, he did everything. 

Nico worked 20 plus years with his best friend, his dad. They ran NS Collision together, in Moriarty. He learned everything he knew about collision repair, fabrication, electrical and auto body painting from his dad. 

He went on to obtain his CDL, multiple certifications and joined a Union called Teamsters Local 399. Through the union he transitioned to being a transport driver and worked on multiple movie sets transporting equipment, building roads and creating scenes including creating rain for a movie by hauling water. Nico loved working in the movie industry. 

Family meant everything to Nico. He is survived by his parents Nelvin and Leona Smith; his sisters Mallory and husband Gage Horvath and Amanda and husband David Varady along with their children Ailah, Eli, Miles and Ryan- who will forever cherish his memory. He is preceded in death by his grandfather the late Lewis H. Begay. 

A service to honor Nico’s life will be held on Monday, April 6th, 2026, at 10am at Crossroads Bible Fellowship located at 2412 Historic Route 66, Edgewood, NM 87015. The burial is immediately following the service at the Stanley Cemetery located at 3947 NM-4, Stanley, NM 87056. A reception will follow immediately after burial at the Moriarty Civic Center located at 202 Broadway St, Moriarty, NM 87035. Friends and family are invited to attend and celebrate the life of Nico who meant so much to so many.

Nico’s presence will be deeply missed, but their love, lessons and spirit will continue to live on in all who were fortunate enough to know him.
