Mountainair

Nancy Stone of Mountainair, New Mexico peacefully passed away in her sleep on May 15, 2025, at 83 years of age.

Born in Mineral Wells, Texas, her family moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where she spent most of her adolescent life. There she developed her deep love for horses by raising her own just outside of the city. Throughout her life, she also made sure to have at least one dog by her side.

She received her undergraduate degree in Art and a master’s degree in Environmental Science. This led her to the National Park Service in San Francisco where she became a docent for Alcatraz and eventually the superintendent for the Hubbell Trading Post in Ganado, Arizona. Throughout, she dedicated her life to conservation and continued to pursue her love of art, culture, and nature.

In 2006, after much searching, Mountainair became the perfect environment in which to build her dream home. She became very active in the Manzano Mountain Art Council and thoroughly enjoyed the book clubs she had belonged to. She treasurd the Mountainair community and the land she called home. She lived out her life surrounded by her much-loved four dogs and two horses.

Nancy is survived by her sister, Jill Jensen, and brother, Andrew Stone (Jeana) along with many relatives and a wide assortment of loving friends. Her body will be cremated, and her ashes will be spread on her beloved land. She will be deeply missed. Donations in her honor can be made to the Friends of the Mountainair Animal Shelter, PO Box 565, Mountainair, NM 87036 (http: fomas.org).
