Lamar Bell Cravens

Obituary Lamar Bell Cravens, 89, a long time resident of Moriarty passed away peacefully following several days of Hospice care as a resident of Beehive Homes Assisted Living in Edgewood, NM on October 22, 2022. Lamar was born on a pinto bean farm near Pedernal in Torrance County, NM on July 3rd, 1933. He attended grades 1-8 in a one-room schoolhouse in Pedernal. He went to school during his Freshman and Sophomore years in Encino, NM. Due to the severe drought, his family moved to Moriarty, NM and built the Cactus Motel, service station, and cafe. He completed high school in Moriarty, graduating in 1951. He then attended UNM for two years before joining the US Army, serving in Germany/Austria. After the Army he returned to UNM where he completed his BS in Geology in 1959. He married Miree in 1963 and began his teaching career in Capitan, NM. He also taught in Bloomfield, NM and eventually ended up back in Moriarty where he taught for many years before retiring from teaching. After that, he ranched and sold real estate for several more years. Lamar is survived by one brother, Leroy Carl Cravens and wife Mercedes from Encino, NM; his wife of 59 years, Virgie Miree (Shook) Cravens; his sons, Troy Lyn Nevins and wife Pamela, Glen Carl Cravens and wife Polly; and daughters Deena Miree Bueno, and Holly Lorine Cravens. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Mary Lorine Cravens, and a brother, Phillip William Cravens. A Celebration of Life will be held at Valley View Christian Church in Edgewood, NM on Saturday, 29 October, 2022 at 10:00am followed by burial at Mountain View Cemetery in Moriarty, NM. Pallbearers will be Justin Nevins, Josh Maynard, Bradley Nevins, Lamar Cravens, Kyle Gallant, and Derrick Haseloff. Honorary Pallbearers will be Dessa Haseloff, Sierra McElory, Sydney Ennis, and Geneva Bueno. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Harris-Hanlon Mortuary.
