Kay Reed

Kay L. Reed was born January 31,1956 in Dallas, Texas to Norman and Louise Winder. She married James Reed November 6, 1999 and together they lived in the Moriarty/Estancia area. After battling an illness for over two years, she peacefully passed away surrounded by loved ones on June 10, 2025. She is survived by her husband James Reed, sister Kathy Bailey and her husband Steve, 2 children and their spouses, 5 grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other extended family, many dear friends including Deb Runion, who was like a daughter, and her ever faithful service dog, Grace. She is preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, a daughter, a granddaughter, and her first loyal service dog, Oreo.

Over the years Kay held many jobs. She acted as a secretary for various companies, she was a teacher at Moriarty Nazarene Church’s christian school and held other various childcare positions. In later years she became a Crisis Chaplain. She loved animals, gardening, cooking, singing and sewing. She sewed her wedding gown, her sisters, and her niece’s.

She cared deeply for anyone she came in contact with and took many under her wing. She fed everyone who stepped in her door and would say “If you go hungry in my house, that’s your fault.” She laughed with many and cried with many. In her last weeks, more than anything, she wanted to know she would see us all in heaven some day, and she had that conversation with all who visited her.

The family would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to all those who helped provide care and companionship to Kay over the last few years. Your kind and selfless service to her will not be forgotten.

Memorial Service for Kay will be held at Harris-Hanlon Mortuary in Moriarty, on June 19, 2025 at 1pm. Reception to follow. There will be an opportunity to share your memories of Kay at the reception. In lieu of flowers, if you feel inclined, please make donations in her name, to the service animal organization of your choice.
